X4: Foundations just got a major Empire update, and Egosoft is framing it as the biggest combat rebalance in the space sim's history.

The update is live now after a beta period, according to Rock Paper Shotgun's June 11 report and Egosoft's rollout notes quoted there. The headline change is a wide pass across weapons, turrets, shields, and ships, meant to make more tactical options viable instead of letting a few familiar builds dominate every fight.

There are a few practical additions beyond balance numbers. Players can recycle Kha'ak wrecks into a new resource called Allographyne, build ship showroom modules back at base, and use new Priority Orders for more immediate RTS-style control when a fleet situation needs attention right now.

That matters because X4 has always asked players to think bigger than one ship. It is a space sim about trade, stations, factions, fleets, and long-term plans. A better command layer and clearer combat balance should make the game less fussy for returning players and less opaque for people who bounced off its rougher edges.

For families, this is still one for older teens and patient adults rather than a casual weekend pick. The appeal is systems, logistics, and large-scale sci-fi strategy. If that sounds like your kind of stress, the Empire update looks like a good reason to reinstall and see how the galaxy handles a little more order.
