Free League Publishing has opened preorders for Forbidden Lands: Alderland, a new campaign module that sends the survival-fantasy RPG south of Ravenland into a war-torn kingdom. The official product page lists a Q1 2027 release window and says preorder buyers receive PDF access now, with physical fulfillment planned a few weeks before release. ICv2 independently confirms the preorder and reports a $41.61 price.

That combination makes Alderland a useful TTRPG story for Crosspad. This is the kind of book that can shape a whole season of play. It is a full campaign tool, with more table weight than a simple lore supplement. Free League lists the Eye of Heaven campaign, eight illustrated adventure sites, a large 52 by 72 cm map, and material on twenty provinces, kin, and religions. For game masters, that means campaign commitment, prep time, tone management, and a decision about whether immediate PDF access is enough reason to buy early.

What Alderland adds

Forbidden Lands already has a strong identity: harsh travel, scarce resources, dangerous sites, and player choices that can carry real consequences. Alderland appears designed to extend that structure into a specific kingdom with its own political and religious pressures. Free League's page describes the region as scarred by war and placed south of Ravenland, which gives existing groups a direct route into new territory.

The Eye of Heaven campaign is the anchor. Eight illustrated adventure sites give the book usable table material, while the map and province descriptions suggest a campaign that can breathe between set pieces. That matters for Forbidden Lands because the game sings when travel, faction pressure, and player ambition all push against each other.

ICv2's trade coverage helps separate the retail facts from the official pitch. The price and Q1 2027 timing give stores and players a clearer planning window. The official page gives the contents and preorder structure. Taken together, the record is stronger than a single storefront blurb.

The table fit question

The main question for a game master is timing. Immediate PDF access can be valuable if a group is already preparing a winter campaign or planning to bridge into Alderland from an existing Forbidden Lands game. It is less compelling for a shelf purchase. A campaign module usually repays early buying when someone will read, mark up, and prepare it before the book arrives.

The family and group discernment piece is tone. A war-torn survival setting can create memorable play, but it asks for a table that wants hardship, desperate travel, and rough moral decisions. Groups with younger players may still enjoy that style with clear expectations. The GM should know whether the table wants grim survival pressure or a lighter fantasy rhythm.

Alderland also sounds like a prep-heavy product. Twenty provinces, multiple kin, religions, a campaign, and a large map are useful only when the GM has time to turn them into decisions at the table. The strongest reason to preorder is a near-term plan. The weakest reason is fear of missing a book before the group has chosen a campaign direction.

Who should watch this

Existing Forbidden Lands groups should pay attention first. Alderland appears built for tables that already like the game's blend of exploration, scarcity, and dangerous freedom. The immediate PDF makes the preorder more practical for those groups because it lets a GM start reading now.

New groups should be slower. A campaign module can be inspiring, but it should follow interest in the core game. If your table has never played Forbidden Lands, start by deciding whether its survival-fantasy pressure fits your group. If it does, Alderland may become a strong next campaign target. If the group mostly wants heroic power fantasy, this module may ask for a different mood than the table wants.

Crosspad's early read: Alderland looks substantial, and the two-source record gives enough concrete detail to cover it responsibly. The wise buying question is whether a group has a real campaign plan before Q1 2027. If the answer is yes, early PDF access has value. If the answer is maybe, waiting costs little.
