Monte Cook Games Announces Between Earth and Sky Tabletop RPG
Rebecca Roanhorse’s fantasy trilogy is getting a tabletop adaptation, but the announcement leaves rules and release timing unspecified.
Monte Cook Games and author Rebecca Roanhorse have announced Between Earth and Sky: The Roleplaying Game, bringing the world of Black Sun, Fevered Star and Mirrored Heavens into a tabletop adaptation. The September 28, 2026 announcement establishes the project’s setting and central conflict, but does not yet explain how those novels will translate into rules at the table.
The publisher places the game in the Meridian, a fictional world inspired by civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas. Its planned design team includes Monte Cook Games senior designer Shanna Germain and Kenna Alexander of Coyote & Crow Games, alongside artists the announcement describes as Columbian and Indigenous American.
According to the publisher’s setting history, a devastating war led the Meridian’s peoples to outlaw magic and worship of the gods, with the Watchers established to prevent their return. That order now faces renewed threats from gods and forbidden magic. The character pitch centers on whether to follow a path laid down by prophecy or pursue personal desires, though the announcement supplies no mechanics governing that choice.
For Christian players, the premise raises a specific question about participation: how will the game ask characters to engage with its fictional gods and forbidden magic? Worship of other gods conflicts with Christian faith, but depicting such worship in a fantasy setting is not, by itself, endorsing it. The announcement establishes those themes without enough detail to judge how play will frame them.
Monte Cook Games described crowdfunding as coming soon in its September 28 announcement and invited readers to sign up for launch notifications. That announcement supplies no campaign launch date, release timetable or rules system. It also does not establish whether crowdfunding has launched since then, leaving the campaign’s status as of October 10 unconfirmed.
