Osprey board and card game team departs as Bloomsbury seeks catalogue buyer
The Spiel Essen booth was cancelled, while future publishing plans remain unresolved for several contracted projects.
Osprey Games’ board and card game team has departed, and Bloomsbury is seeking a buyer for the catalogue rather than the department as a whole, BoardGameWire reported on October 16. The change leaves the future of several contracted games unresolved, even as the company says existing titles remain stocked.
A Bloomsbury spokesperson confirmed to BoardGameWire that all employees who worked exclusively on creating and manufacturing board and card games had left. The outlet, citing multiple sources, reported that the departures were redundancies at the end of September 2026. The company declined to disclose how many people were affected. BoardGameWire also reported that Osprey cancelled its Spiel Essen 2026 booth.
This is not a closure of all Osprey Games operations. The sale announced in May was described as a shift away from the board and card game operation to concentrate on wargames and RPGs. According to the October report, the search now concerns the catalogue alone, with no timetable specified for completing a sale.
For players looking to buy existing games, the company’s stated position offers some reassurance, but not a commitment to future print runs. The spokesperson described stock levels as healthy and said there were no current plans for reprints, though that position would remain under review.
In the October 16 report, the spokesperson also said Undaunted 2200: Revolution and Upland & Prairie remained scheduled for release in October 2026. That was an assurance about the release plan, not confirmation that either game had reached release.
Beyond those two titles, the spokesperson confirmed that multiple unreleased board and card games remained under contract at different stages of development, without saying whether Osprey or a buyer would publish them. With sale discussions still ongoing and no completion timetable given, the catalogue’s next owner and those projects’ publishing arrangements remain unsettled.
